Emblems

These are the emblems that adorned the 1983-88 Cougar models. We love to think of them as “automotive jewelry” and sort of a lost art when it comes to modern car branding. They don’t make things like this anymore, folks. The really complex cloisonné ones, in particular, are incredibly delicate and engaging. These emblems signify the end of an era of automotive prosperity and celebration of brand, before things got too slick and polished. We thought you’d enjoy a look at yesterday’s craftsmanship as it pertained to adorning these cars.

For reference and restoring purposes we’ve listed official Ford part numbers listed where possible (these may differ from number stamped on actual part). If you know of a Cougar emblem that’s missing from this page, please contact us.

1983 Hood Ornament
Metal, upright style. Also used on some 1981-82 Cougars.

This plastic emblem was affixed to the lower driver’s side corner of the grille.

Metal, chrome-plated cat head recessed into grille.

Chrome metal surround. Required rear courtesy lamps.

Metal. These were also used on the interior of some pre-1983 Cougars and Mercury Lynx vehicles.

Available on optional wheel for XR-7’s only.

1987-88 Horn Pad Emblem
Used on 1987-88 LS models, and XR-7 models without the sport wheel option.

COUGAR Dash Emblem
Plastic. Found on 1983-84 passenger side dash panels.

Other Exterior (Aftermarket)

1987-88 Blue Max C-Pillar Emblem, Version 1
Cloisonné. This seems to be a regional version, with a similar emblem used on Blue Max Mercury Topaz cars.

1987-88 Blue Max C-Pillar Emblem, Version 2
Cloisonné. Some 1988 cars had this version of the emblem, which was again used on 1989-97 cars.

Blue Max/Special Edition COUGAR Trunk Nomenclature
Again cloisonné, these all appear to have come in red only. “COUGAR”

Freedom Series Fender Emblem
Not much is known about the Freedom Series. Seems to be 1987-88 only.

1987-88 Mexican COUGAR Front Bumper Emblem
Since there was no Mercury division in Mexico, these rubberized emblems were made for the front bumper cover of Mexican-spec Cougars.

E&G Designer Series Nomenclature
For cars with special E&G Designer Series package (half roof), the lettering was affixed to the side of the car, near C-pillar emblem. The small numbered badges and/or griffins were at the base of the B-pillar on the roof band.

Blue Max Dash Emblem #1
Cloisonné. Used in 1987-88 Blue Max Editions.

Blue Max Dash Emblem #2
Cloisonné. Unknown what years used this emblem. May be Topaz-only; not very common.

Special Edition Dash Emblem
Cloisonné. Similar in design to the 20th dash emblem, found underneath the clock.
