Congratulations on the purchase of your Cougar!
Although the car may be new to you, keep in mind that it's at least 20 years old now. Many parts will need to be replaced over its lifetime. And although these Cougars are very dependable, you still have to maintain them and treat them correctly. Still, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your new Cougar will keep you on the road dependably for a long time. High mileage cars are actually the norm; a majority of visitors to this site have Cougars with well over 100,000 miles, and some over 200,000-- even 300,000. This car was manufactured with tried-and-true Ford parts, and most replacement parts are relatively inexpensive. So you shouldn't worry too much about finding what you need.
But that's another story. Right now you're probably wanting to familiarize yourself with the car just a bit more. Other than a road test, this site is the best place for information on the Internet if you're new to a Cougar. When you're finished here, feel free to peruse the Tech Center. In there you will find specifications and capacities, tips and tricks, troubleshooting, and other handy information.
VEHICLE REPORT
If you're curious as to the actual history of your Cougar when it was originally sold, you can call Ford Customer Care at (800) 392-3673 in the US, or (800) 565-3673 in Canada. Have your complete VIN number ready first. Ask the representative for a "History 999 Report", and in a few weeks you will receive a letter from Ford containing all information on your car, including original equipment options. Best of all, it's free of charge!
If you ever have a question about your Cougar, no matter how dumb you think it may be, feel free to contact us at any time. We're always willing to help you out with your queries. And there is never a charge for anything on this site.
PLEASE NOTE: The Introduction section will familiarize you with your Cougar and its various features. This site is NOT a substitute for an owner's manual; rather, it is a supplement and provides guidelines in conjunction with your manual. If your Cougar did not come with an owner's manual, you may purchase a new one at Helm Publications, or you can usually find one used on eBay or similar auction websites, or at swap meets. It is highly recommended that you have an owner's manual for reference. A Chilton's or Haynes manual is also an excellent supplement. Pictured at left is the Chilton's 1983-92 Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar Repair Manual. It is probably the best source for most technical information about your car, and this version even includes electrical schematics for troubleshooting. It would be well worth your while to hunt one down on eBay.
