State Of The Cat
(Blog)

Stock or Modified?

It's almost the end of the millenium now, and once we cross the threshold of the 21st century, our Cougars will suddenly seem...well, old. Are they really getting that old this soon? And what will the future hold for us? I've been giving this quite a bit of thought lately. In less than 5 scant years, the 1983 Cougar will be 20 years old. Very sobering, isn't it?

It is almost time that we seriously start thinking about keeping some cars in original condition. Since parts will only become more scarce in the future, it's important that we try as best we can now to maintain the appearance and performance of our Cats. That means if a body panel needs replaced, original Ford parts should be considered. Or if the battery is dead, then a Motorcraft one goes in. Little things such as these can make a big difference in the future. Now some owners, such as those who are fortunate to have an Anniversary Cougar, have a tough time now finding replacement emblems and such. Imagine what it will be like in 5-10 years. This means whatever you can do now is very important.

Now if you're like me and you like to modify the Cougar to your tastes, then there's nothing stopping you---go for it. Plenty of others out there, frankly. But there will always be someone out there that wants to keep the car in original shape, and we cannot overlook this fact. Just think about it...when we're older and go to car shows, what will we see? Probably cars from the late 70's to the early 90's. Lots of F- and G-body GM vehicles (Cutlass, Regal, Firebird, etc.). Surely the Cougars and Thunderbirds will be out in full force. And wouldn't you just love to see a totally awesome Fox Cougar in original shape? With the spoke hubcaps and all? Might not be appealing right now, but in a few years, you'll sure start to think about it more and more. So whichever way you decide to keep your Cat--stock or modified--remember that with the future at our doorstep, your own personal involvement with your Cougar could make a difference to the next generation. Whatever you can do to keep the car running and looking good is your responsibility. Actually, all of our responsibilities.

Until next time,

eric
