Modifying
Interior Tricks

If there are a few things that you don't like about your interior, or maybe you want to do some custom stuff for shows, this section is tailor-made just for you.

The stark emptiness of the passenger side of the 1985-88 dashboard can be a little overwhelming. It almost begs for something, and not just a plunked-on emblem either. A little creativity and you can make this slick light-up dash emblem. The base is the flip-around ashtray housing behind the original consolette. Simply drill a hole in the back and wire the bulb in to lights-on power (the wire for the clock is good for that), and then make a plexiglass cover for the front. The lettering can be done easily with cut vinyl. The white is semi-opaque so the light shines through nicely. Hardest part is bashing the hole in the dashboard for it, because once it's in there, it's in there for life. So think carefully about this before proceeding.

This faux carbon fiber material is slick. Cutting it for the dash is a little tricky...but the results are well worth it. It gives a very slick look to the dash and is a wecome change from the fake woodgrain.

Notice also how painting dash trim and surrounding panels the same color as the interior does a LOT for the look of the interior, no matter what color yours is.

Another option is a true woodgrain dash appliqué. The only known company to make them is Medera Concepts, and they carry kits for both the 1983-84 and 1985-88 dashes. According to their instructions the kit installs in about 10 minutes, and you have a choice of Walnut Burl or Carpathian Elm Burl woods.
